SONDER

Project Code :  101196423 / CERV

The SONDER project was born from the shared commitment of five diverse partners to bring forward the silenced voices of Afro-European communities—particularly Black women living in Mediterranean countries—and transform public discourse through the power of storytelling and art. Inspired by the concept of “sonder,” which refers to the profound realization that every passerby lives a life as complex and vivid as your own, the project seeks to rehumanize narratives often overlooked or misrepresented in mainstream media.

Rooted in the principles of the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme, aims to counter systemic racism and Afrophobia by building emotional bridges between storytellers and audiences. It does SONDER so through a unique methodology that combines personal storytelling, participatory research, and artistic co-creation. From the very beginning, the project has placed lived experience at the center, treating each story not as a data point but as a moment of truth, healing, and empowerment.

The consortium—composed of the Hellenic-Kenyan Chamber (Greece), ComMedi (Greece), CESIE (Italy), ENWAD (Spain), and ABiED (Cyprus)—reflects a blend of expertise in civic education, creative methodologies, research, and digital innovation. Each partner brings to the table a strong connection to underrepresented communities and a deep understanding of inclusive practices.

Through the collection of 60 in-depth interviews, SONDER creates a safe and respectful space for Afro-descendant individuals to share their stories. These narratives are not merely documented but become the foundation for digital comics, short films, and community theatre pieces co-created with local artists. This artistic transformation adds layers of interpretation and accessibility, engaging wider audiences while respecting the authenticity of each voice.

What makes SONDER stand out is its commitment to “slow media”—a storytelling approach that resists the speed and noise of social media in favor of depth, care, and emotional resonance. Story collection takes time, and narrators are treated not as “subjects” but as co-creators who shape the narrative alongside artists and researchers. This approach allows the project to foster real connection and long-term impact, especially among educators, youth workers, and community organizers who participate in our capacity-building workshops.

Beyond storytelling, SONDER also works to build inclusive civic spaces. The project offers training and awareness-raising activities for educators, NGOs, and public stakeholders to address unconscious bias, foster empathy, and promote intercultural understanding. Through its public exhibitions, digital platform, and participatory dialogues, SONDER opens up spaces for reflection, learning, and solidarity.

The essence of SONDER lies in its ability to shift perspectives—helping people see the “Other” not as foreign or different, but as fully human, with a story worth hearing. By combining narrative, art, and civic engagement, the project aspires to reshape how Europe listens to, sees, and values the richness of its African-descendant populations. In doing so, SONDER is not just a project—it’s an invitation to look again, and to truly see.
